The road itself is about 31 miles and takes roughly an hour without stopping. Most visitors budget half a day so they can walk Founders Grove, detour into Rockefeller Forest, and stop at a river access point.

What is the best stop on the Avenue of the Giants?

Founders Grove has the most accessible short loop trail among giant trees. Rockefeller Forest, reached via Mattole Road out of Weott, is the largest remaining old-growth coast redwood forest in the world and is noticeably quieter.

Can you swim along the Avenue of the Giants?

Yes. The South Fork Eel River runs alongside much of the route with several summer swimming holes and gravel bars. Water levels drop through the season, so conditions in August look very different from June.
